THE EUROPEAN DESIGN SHOW

By exploring every area of design - from fashion and furniture to beautiful books and the latest advances in multimedia - The European Design Show will showcase the Design Museum's selection of the most compelling developments in contemporary design. The exhibition will celebrate the diversity of design and its impact on our lives with exhibits embodying different aspects of design.

MARIO SCHIFANO - BIG PAINTINGS

Mario Schifano is one of the main representative of Italian Pop Art. His first works were the famous yellow monochromes, but soon elements from the contemporary urban landscape started to appear on the canvas. This exhibition represents paintings of big dimensions, which focus on the 1960s - the most significant period of Schifano's artistic production. The works have been carefully selected by the famous Italian art critic and curator Achille Bonito Oliva.

In collaboration with the Associazione Culturale BluBramante and Archivio Mario Schifano.

SALVATOR ROSA: WILD LANDSCAPES PRIVATE VIEW - MEMBERS ONLY

Salvator Rosa (1615 - 73) was one of the most famous Italian landscape painters of the seventeenth century. Many of his works have a mysterious, often violent character. They seem to reflect something of his character which was said to be combative and melancholy. Indeed, in addition to being a painter he was also a musician, an actor and a poet. His artistic influence was widespread and profound, influencing landscape developments in Italy and England (where he had an enormous reputation in the eighteenth-century).

MORBIDAMENTE DONNA

Exhibition and fashion show of creations by the fast expanding Italian plus size brand Elena Miro', who emphasizes the value of the rotund woman. Curvaceous women have been immortalized throughout the centuries by important artists such as Titian and Rubens, as the utmost source of earthly beauty. In collaboration with Vesteben-Miroglio and the cultural association Il Circolo. Refreshments kindly offered by Ponti's.

This is a charity event, and an offer of £15 is suggested.

WANDERING IN DANTE'S INFERNO

Exhibition of oil paintings by French artist Annick Gaillard, portraying the characters of Dante's Inferno, with explanatory text by writer Painton Cowen. On the occasion of the opening of the exhibition, there will be a presentation of the most recent publication of the Divine Comedy by poet J.G. Nichols and Prof. Martin McLaughlin, together with Dr. Manuele Gragnolati. The writers Gaia Servadio and Ian Thomson will read extracts from the Divine Comedy in English and Italian. In collaboration with Hesperus Press.

The Children's Bookshow will be touring the best writers and illustrators from the UK and the rest of Europe. Second and final appointment with Italian short films, in collaboration with TTV Riccione, the international theatre festival which investigates the relationships between stage arts and new media. Special guests will be members of Rem&Cap, a cult group in the Italian research theatre scene. With their clever ironic and poetic subtlety, they have used themselves as never-ending metaphors, venturing into a revision of the language that starts from silence and that in the end will transform the objects into the third character.

DANTE'S EPISTLE TO CANGRANDE AND ITS TWO AUTHORS

Lecture by Prof. Carlo Ginzburg, FBA, University of California at Los Angeles. In his Epistle to Cangrande della Scala Dante allegedly commented on his poem and especially on the beginning of the 'Paradise'. For two centuries scholars have debated on the authenticity of the epistle. The lecture will suggest a fresh approach to the topic, which would lead to a new somewhat unexpected conclusion.

cation of Prof. Giorello's latest book Prometeo, Ulisse, Gilgames, Figure del mito (Raffaello Cortina), a conversation on various topics in philosophy and literature, such as the importance of myths and the role of writing. Prof. John McCourt has recently published The years of Bloom: James Joyce in Trieste 1904-1920 (Lilliput Press). This exhibition presents the evolution of our culinary tradition over the last fifty years, through valuable images and texts. The show firts opened in 2003 in Milan on the occasion of the celebration of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Accademia Italiana della Cucina and has since been on tour around the world. It is aimed especially at the younger audience, which can follow the route of the evolution of the Italian cuisine and gastronomy through a preordained, ideal itinerary.

MILLE E UNA NOTTE

Performance by Compagnia Movimento Danza, established in 1984 by choreographer Gabriella Stazio. The company strives towards experimental research in various aspects of contemporary dance. In Mille e una notte, four dancers explores circular movement, both as individuals and as a group. The emotions created by the performers are transferred to the audience in an emphatic exchange.

MAZZINI AND THE PHILOSOPHY OF MUSIC

Guitar concert by Marco Battaglia dedicated to Giuseppe Mazzini, who was profoundly sensitive to musical language and was himself an accomplished amateur singer and guitarist as well as author of critical essays on the philosophy of music. The programme proposed by Battaglia includes pieces by Paganini, Giuliani, Regondi, Verdi, Mertz and Legnani, all mentioned in Mazzini's letters and writings as his favourite composers.

GIUSEPPE MAZZINI AND THE GLOBALISATION OF DEMOCRATIC NATIONALISM, 1805-2005

Nationalism has become one of the most influential and truly 'global' ideologies over the past two centuries. Its rise has been accompanied by periodical revolutionary outbursts. The proposed conference will focus on one of the most influential among the 'prophets' of democratic nationalism, Giuseppe Mazzini.
