SEBALD NESTA CONFERENCE - GERMAINE GREER ON TRANSLATION

The Sebald - Nesta Conference is organised by the British Centre for Literary Translation with the support of several cultural institutions. WANDERING IN DANTE'S INFERNO

Exhibition of oil paintings by French artist Annick Gaillard, portraying the characters of Dante's Inferno, with explanatory text by writer Painton Cowen. On the occasion of the opening of the exhibition, there will be a presentation of the most recent publication of the Divine Comedy by poet J.G. Nichols and Prof. Martin McLaughlin, together with Dr. Manuele Gragnolati. The writers Gaia Servadio and Ian Thomson will read extracts from the Divine Comedy in English and Italian. In collaboration with Hesperus Press.

THE CHILDREN'S BOOKSHOW 2005, OUTSIDE IN

The Children's Bookshow will be touring the best writers and illustrators from the UK and the rest of Europe. This year's theme, Outside In: Children's Writers in Translation, has been chosen to introduce British children to the richness of other cultures through poetry, stories and picture. CHILDREN'S ADVENTURES IN BOOKLAND

Meeting with Francesco D'Adamo, a children's books writer and expert in pedagogy and teenagers' issues, author of Iqbal: a novel (Simon and Schuster) and Johnny il seminatore (Fabbri). D'Adamo's books are highly appreciated for their educational and formative values. In May 2004 the writer was awarded the International Reading Association Teachers' Choices Booklist Prize.

Part of the Italian Language Week. A course for teachers of Italian in the UK, exploring language through books 'translated' into films. Good knowledge of Italian is required. Enrolment fee for the whole course: £50 (concessions: £25).

OPEN DAY FOR TEACHERS OF ITALIAN

A day dedicated to teachers of Italian in England and Wales, with workshops, book presentations and lectures on teaching techniques through various disciplines (music, games, theatre, etc.). The event is free but registration is required. Event organised in cooperation with the Italian publishing houses Edumond - Le Monnier SpA and ELI editori.

THE TIMES BFI 49th LONDON FILM FESTIVAL

New Italian films presented by directors and actors in the European section of the established London film festival, in collaboration with AIP-Filmitalia.

Second and final appointment with Italian short films, in collaboration with TTV Riccione, the international theatre festival which investigates the relationships between stage arts and new media. Special guests will be members of Rem&Cap, a cult group in the Italian research theatre scene. With their clever ironic and poetic subtlety, they have used themselves as never-ending metaphors, venturing into a revision of the language that starts from silence and that in the end will transform the objects into the third character.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN MEMORY OF VITTORE BRANCA

THE ORIGIN OF WORDS

Presentation of the Lessico etimologico italiano (Wiesbaden), the most significant tool for Italian etymological studies. Presented by Max Pfister, founder and director of the lexicon, Prof. Emeritus of Universitaet des Saarlandes and Prof. honoris causa of many other international universitites. With the participation of Prof. Giulio Lepschy (UCL), Prof. Arturo Tosi (Royal Holloway) and other internationally renowned linguists.
